This fall's Forum will be divided into three distinct sections or blocks. The first and third blocks will present Martin Luther's thoughts, teachings, and faith.
The Second Forum block will be led by Pastor Gene Holtz, embracing all four Sundays in October and will center on a study of the Psalms. We are pleased to have Pastor Holtz lead this block. Pastor Holz was the senior pastor at Clairmont Lutheran Church for a number of years and shared that ministry with Associate Pastor David Jorstad, who is now the SMLC Senior Pastor.
The Luther blocks come from “The Great Courses” video presentation, Luther: Gospel, Law, and Reformation taught by Professor Phillip Carey, of Eastern University, St. Davids, Pennsylvania. Professor Carey has an undergraduate degree in English Literature and Philosophy from Washington University in Missouri and an M.A. and PhD in Philosophy and Religious Studies from Yale. In addition to teaching at Eastern University, Dr. Carey has also taught at Yale, the University of Hartford, the University of Connecticut, and Villanova University. He has published scholarly articles on Augustine, Luther and the doctrine of the Trinity. In 2000, Oxford University Press published his book “Augustine's Invention of Inner Self”.
Each video lecture will last approximately 35 minutes, followed by a time for comments, questions, and discussion. An outline of each lecture will be provided so that you will be able to review the presentation at your leisure.
