What is a Lutheran?
SMLC Back Window

The Lutheran Church originates out of Martin Luther's sixteen-century protesting of certain Roman Catholic church teachings for which Luther found no biblical basis. His primary insight into the Gospel was that salvation is never earned by our own effort, but is a free gracious gift of God.

Thus, Lutherans have ties to Roman Catholicism (Martin Luther was, after all, an Augustinian monk), as well as to other Protestant churches. If you would like to learn more about what a Lutheran is, please visit http://www.elca.org/communication/brief.html

To become a Lutheran, only Baptism and instruction in the Christian faith is required. If you are already baptized, it will be necessary only to attend a membership class in a Lutheran congregation and thus signify your desire to become a part of its community.

Evangelical Lutheran Church In America (ELCA)

We are proud to be affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. It is currently the largest Lutheran Group in America with over five million members. Lutherans are the oldest, largest and one of the fastest growing Protestant groups world wide.
We remain true to three main themes:
1. We are put right with God solely by God's grace to us;
2. We are saved by our faith in Christ and not by religious rules;
3. Scripture alone is our final authority and guide for our faith.
